Help:Administration

From SideQuest Wiki

Current access policy

The wiki is in private review: an account is required to read it. Public registration is disabled. After public launch, visitors will be able to read without an account; editing will still require an approved account.

Account Current access
Ordinary account Read articles; cannot edit or upload
Approved editor Read, edit articles and upload permitted image files
Administrator Edit, manage accounts, assign the editor role, protect pages and block users

Account approval is not edit approval. Approved editors' saves take effect immediately. No extension for holding edits pending review is installed.

Add a contributor

  1. While logged in as an administrator, open Create account. Choose a separate wiki username and a unique initial password. Email delivery and email password resets are disabled.
  2. Share the login details privately with that contributor. Do not share your administrator account.
  3. Open User rights, enter their username, and load the account.
  4. Check Approved editors, enter a reason, and save. Do not grant administrator, bureaucrat or interface-administrator rights for ordinary contribution work.
  5. Ask the contributor to log in and follow Help:Editing. They use Edit source, Show preview, an edit summary, and Save changes.

To remove editing access, return to User rights and remove Approved editors. The account can still read during private review.

Check and correct edits

  • Open Recent changes. Select diff next to a change to compare the old and new text.
  • Watch important articles using the star beside the page tabs. Review them through Watchlist. Watchlist email notifications are currently disabled.
  • Open an article's View history tab to inspect revisions. Use undo to reverse a bad edit and give a reason. Check the resulting diff before saving, especially if later edits exist.
  • Use Block user for disruptive accounts. Blocking does not remove their existing edits; review and revert those separately.
  • A public revision history can retain text after an ordinary undo or deletion. If someone posts private information, an administrator must also review the affected revisions, edit summaries and uploaded file versions. Do not assume an undo removes sensitive information from history.

Protect shared pages

For the Main Page and shared templates, open Tools → Protect, choose Allow only administrators for editing and moving, give a reason, and confirm. Ordinary editors can still work on unprotected articles. Site CSS already requires interface-administrator rights.

Spam and review options

The current first barrier is invite-only accounts and explicit editor approval. Contributors should add sources, keep article text factual, upload only permitted art, and avoid advertising, harassment, personal information and unreleased content.

For a broader contributor group, a compatible Moderation extension can hold new contributors' edits and uploads for administrator approval. It is not installed. Trusted contributors can later be exempted. A queue still requires someone to review it; it does not decide whether game facts are correct or content violates policy.

Languages

Users can change the wiki interface language in Preferences → User profile → Language. This changes menus and messages, not article text.

Articles are currently in English. A version of Translate compatible with MediaWiki 1.43 can provide translated article pages, language navigation, proofreading and notices when source text changes. It is not installed. Establish the English source and recruit reviewers for each language before adding translations.
